I have a friend whose every Facebook status update is a bit.ly link. I totally thought it was a virus and I told him his account had been hacked. Oops.

Hello, it's 2010! I'm surprised anyone's not seen bit.ly since it's the most popular URL shortener on the net and is used much more widely than just Twitter. Personally I prefer tr.im, which used to be on the same level as bit.ly until Twitter set bit.ly as a default and murdered all competition.

Marco, in reseaching this article I stumbled across a number of pieces (such as this one from the NYT: http://nyti.ms/Hk0dH) that commented on tinyURL's reliability issues.

I just started trying bit.ly, I had tried tinyurl, but bit.ly has great tracking for clicks - and it's super easy to use.
