<h2>The Winner of Google&#8217;s Fiber Project Is&#8230;</h2>
<p>&#8230;going to be announced by the end of the year, apparently. *sigh*</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the word straight from the <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/next-steps-for-our-experimental-fiber.html" target="_blank">horse&#8217;s mouth</a>:<br />
</br><br />
<i>&#8220;Based on a rigorous review of the data, we will announce our target community or communities by the end of the year.&#8221;</i>
</p>
<p>According to Google&#8217;s blog, over 1,100 communities and 194,000 individuals submitted applications for the gigabit fiber experiment. (I only got to a fraction of that on <a href="http://www.zettaphile.com/2010/03/02/list-of-cities-vying-for-googles-gigabit-project/" target="_blank">my list of cities competing for Google&#8217;s gigabit project</a>.) In typical Google-does-cool-stuff-with-data fashion, they&#8217;ve published a map showing where submissions came from:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.zettaphile.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/googlefibermap.png" rel="lightbox[570]"><img src="http://www.zettaphile.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/googlefibermap-300x130.png" alt="Map of Submissions for Googles Fiber Project" title="googlefibermap" width="300" height="130" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-573" /></a></p>
<p></br></p>
<p>I&#8217;m very curious as to what will take place next. I&#8217;ll be keeping an eye out for updates by Google&#8211;but if anybody has some (legitimate) inside information s/he wants to pass this way, it would be quite welcome!
</p>
<p><i>P.S. Good Luck to All Those Who Applied!</i></p>
